The Cambodian national football team finds itself without any opponents to play against and has no scheduled matches, conflicting with its plans to build a team for the World Cup.
On 26 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Kampuchea Thmey, a local Cambodian media outlet, reported on the movements of the "Angkor Warriors." Khiev Sarey, Secretary General of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), updated on the senior national team's preparation plans for the upcoming March FIFA international window, confirming that the Cambodian national team will "have no friendly matches" during this period.
However, the federation is not standing still; it has pledged to make every effort to coordinate and secure official friendly matches during the next FIFA window in June.
The FFC Secretary General explained two key factors behind fans' disappointment this month.
1. Opponent coordination issues: The federation contacted agencies to arrange friendly matches, but no national teams accepted invitations for the scheduled period, making it impossible to organize suitable matches.
2. Congested domestic league schedule: Currently, Cambodia's football calendar is very tight, including professional league matches, the Hun Sen Cup, and accommodating continental competitions like the AFC. Having no national team fixtures this round allows organizers to adjust schedules more flexibly in support of professional clubs.
Regarding Cambodia's recent results, after being eliminated from the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers following a 2-4 penalty shootout loss to Sri Lanka (2-2 draw in regular time), the senior national team has had very few matches. Last year, they played only four games, which is very low for a team aiming to develop towards Asian football or the World Cup between 2042 and 2046, or in the next 16-20 years.
