Middle East Erupts! Irans 12,000-Seat Stadium Reduced to Rubble by Bombing

Iran's 12,000-seat indoor stadium suffered severe damage in an airstrike.

On 6 Mar 2026 GMT+7, amid Middle East warfare involving clashes between the US-Israel alliance and Iran, the conflict has resulted in over 1,000 deaths and extensive damage to numerous buildings.

Most recently, the 12,000-seat indoor stadium located within Tehran's Azadi Sports Complex in Iran sustained heavy damage after an air attack by the US military; the cycling stadium, dormitories, and swimming pool were also damaged.

This indoor stadium was completed in 1974 to host the 7th Asian Games and has since been a venue for international martial arts, volleyball, and basketball competitions in Iran.

Ali Reza Sohrabian, president of Iran's Rowing Federation, condemned the attack as a violation of International Red Cross rules under international humanitarian law.

“The destruction of sports, educational, and healthcare facilities is explicitly prohibited by Red Cross principles during wartime, yet today we have witnessed a direct attack on the sports venue at Azadi Stadium,” he stated.
