Tuchel Speaks Frankly After England Draws with Uruguay in Injury Time, Mentions One Player

Thomas Tuchel, coach of England's national team, spoke candidly after his side conceded a late equalizer at home to Uruguay in their latest friendly match.

Thomas Tuchel, England's national team manager, said he accepted the result after Uruguay came from behind to draw 1-1 in the friendly match last night. He noted that they learned many lessons from a strong opponent and defended Ben White after the home fans booed him.

Tuchel said, “I learned a lot from this game because Uruguay is a strong opponent, and you can see it in the details of the match as well as the level of play.”

“When you play against midfielders like Manuel Ugarte and Federico Valverde, you witness top-level defensive skills from players like them. That’s why we needed this kind of test.”

“It was the test I expected. I knew for months because Bielsa (Uruguay's coach) called me to say they would take this game very seriously and field their best team. You could see it from their substitutions—they made no compromises. So, it was very tough for us.”

“We had many new players on the field and used a new tactical approach—a completely new starting eleven who had never played together before. But they performed well in training camp and today, because I think they applied that structure. They tried hard, helped each other, and attempted to create chances.”

“I heard that he (Ben White) was booed, but actually, I didn’t hear it on the pitch because I was busy with substitutions and giving tactical instructions. So, I think the booing was not the majority voice.”

“There were both boos and supportive responses for him. I’m disappointed by the booing because, of course, we protect our players, and he performed excellently in training camp and deserved to play.”

“He even deserved to start, and he nearly helped us win, but I understand this has happened to other players here at Wembley before.”

“He must accept it. We will always defend him and hope that everyone can move on and accept it because he is ready to write a new chapter, and we are ready to give him a chance.”

Ben White previously declined a national team call-up under Gareth Southgate after the 2022 World Cup, reportedly due to personal issues and dissatisfaction with the national team environment. However, he has now returned under Thomas Tuchel’s management.
