Cabinet to Discuss Urgent Deal on 2026 FIFA World Cup Broadcast Rights on 12 May

The Cabinet is set to discuss the urgent matter of securing broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 12 May.

On 11 May 2026, a source from the Government House revealed that the Cabinet meeting scheduled for 12 May 2026 will include a key agenda item to discuss the purchase of broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

The discussion is urgent due to tight deadlines, as the tournament is scheduled to take place from 11 June to 19 July 2026 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This discussion aligns with the government's main policy to enable Thai citizens to watch world-class football matches free of charge, aiming to bring happiness and inspire youth to engage in sports, which benefits both physical and mental health nationwide.

Previously, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the government is striving to manage this matter as best as possible; although it may not be able to purchase the broadcast rights directly, it will coordinate with the private sector to secure them.

Last week, the Prime Minister held talks with the chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) regarding the broadcasting approach for the World Cup. It is expected that all details and clarity on the budget and operational methods will be finalized following the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.
