A Newcastle United player openly admits he hates Liverpool, known as the "Reds".
Dan Burn, defender for the "Magpies" Newcastle United, admits he hates the "Reds" Liverpool because they played a part in Newcastle missing out on the 1996 English Premier League title.
In that match, Liverpool came from behind to beat Newcastle during injury time with a winning goal by Stan Collymore, causing then-Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan to slump forward onto an advertising board at Anfield. Ultimately, Newcastle was overtaken by Manchester United to win the Premier League title.
Burn said, "I've hated Liverpool ever since the 90s when you saw Kevin Keegan bowing his head over the advertising board at Anfield."
"That feeling has been ingrained in me as a Newcastle fan who respects them (Liverpool) because we are similar cities, both working-class, but I also hate them because they're a strong team, aren't they? They kept winning championships."
"So I want to beat them in the league at least once before I am no longer here."
During the 1995-96 season, Newcastle was praised for having one of the most entertaining, combative teams with a distinct character, featuring players familiar to fans such as goalkeeper Pavel Srníček, David Ginola, Keith Gillespie, Les Ferdinand, and Faustino Asprilla.
