Van Dijk Speaks at Length After Liverpools Narrow Win Over Premier League Bottom Club Wolves

Van Dijk speaks at length after Liverpool's narrow win over Premier League bottom club Wolves.

On 28 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's captain and defender, gave a post-match interview following the 18th game of the 2025-26 English Premier League season. The Reds narrowly defeated Wolverhampton, the league's bottom team, 2-1 at Anfield.

Liverpool increased their tally to 32 points, rising to 4th place in the Premier League standings, maintaining a position near the top. Meanwhile, Wolverhampton remain winless with only 2 points, stuck at the bottom, and face a growing risk of relegation.

Van Dijk commented on Liverpool's narrow victory over Wolverhampton: "I think it was unfortunate that we conceded a goal early in the second half, which gave them the momentum and energy to press on. I believe we played very well in the first half and scored two good goals."

"We controlled possession well, defended strongly, and of course they pressed more aggressively in the second half. We tried to execute what we discussed at halftime. Unfortunately, we couldn't fully do that, but credit to Wolves for doing better in that aspect."

"Overall, we found a way to win, which is crucial, especially in this season and given our situation with many injured players missing. That’s no excuse for the second half, but it’s certainly good to have the win, and that matters a lot."

"(On the team having to fight hard for results lately) You have to find ways to win. Looking at this season, there have been good and bad periods, some good matches, and unfortunately some poor ones."

"You have to give your all and fight for every second on the pitch. I think you’ve seen that, not just today but over the past 2-3 games, that we really want to win. Today was a good game."

"Of course, that's part of the game. Towards the end, you have to give your all, especially when they have four attackers pressing hard for second balls. But that’s part of the game, and we have to be ready for that."

"I think we showed that today. It might not have looked pretty, but I think we’re happy to get the win, and now we’ll focus on the next game."

In the 2025-26 Premier League, Liverpool will next host Leeds United on New Year's Day, 1 January.
