Italian media report that Roma dreams of bringing Mohamed Salah back to his former club as his future with Liverpool grows uncertain.
On 1 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Italian media reported that AS Roma is closely watching the surprising possibility of signing Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian superstar winger, back to the Stadio Olimpico amid uncertainty about his future at Liverpool.
According to La Repubblica, tensions between Salah and Liverpool have increased over the past few weeks, despite his contract extension last season through 2027. The main cause is disagreements with new head coach Arne Slot, including being dropped from important games and media interviews that worsened the team atmosphere.
Liverpool reportedly is open to loaning out Salah this January on a short-term deal, but a major issue is the cost. Salah earns about 24 million euros annually before tax, meaning even a six-month loan would cost Roma nearly 12 million euros, even if the 32-year-old agrees to reduce his wages.
However, the idea of bringing Salah back is still seen more as a “dream” than a likely deal, especially since coach Gian Piero Gasperini has not committed to signing a superstar-level player like this.
Therefore, Roma’s board has shifted focus to more feasible targets, including Italy international forward Giacomo Raspadori. Reports say negotiations with Atletico Madrid are well advanced for a loan deal worth about 20 million euros, with an obligation to buy if Roma qualify for the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is also awaiting further discussions on Salah’s future after his return from representing Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
