Manchester United decided to promote 41-year-old former player Darren Fletcher from U18 coach to interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s departure. Fletcher will lead the team in his first Premier League match away at Burnley tonight at 03:15 GMT+7.
Darren Fletcher opened up about the behind-the-scenes of accepting the hot seat, saying he sought advice from Sir Alex Ferguson, his former boss at Manchester United, before agreeing to the role.
Fletcher said, "I don’t like making important decisions without consulting Sir Alex first. I have a good relationship with him, so I wanted to talk to him and ultimately get his approval. Honestly, I think he deserves that respect."
"I wanted to consult him first, and he agreed with my thinking. When you’re an employee of the club, your duty is to do your best for Manchester United. That’s what I try to live by every day. So his words put me at ease."
Currently, Manchester United sits 6th in the Premier League with 31 points, trailing 4th-place Liverpool by 3 points. Their target is to finish in the top four to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League.
