Who Says Its Over? Van Dijk Declares Liverpool Still in the Title Hunt This Season

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, confirmed that the Reds are ready to fight in the FA Cup to reaffirm their status as champions. He also warned his teammates not to underestimate Barnsley, who have previously caused nightmares at Anfield.

On 11 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's captain, affirmed that the Reds are prepared for a major battle and intend to use the FA Cup as a platform to prove the club's identity, stressing that they will not underestimate Barnsley under any circumstances.

Jürgen Klopp’s squad recently drew 0-0 away against Premier League leaders Arsenal last Thursday, extending their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, despite experts giving them little chance of escaping defeat at the Emirates Stadium before the game.

However, despite the recent modest performances, van Dijk believes this is the time for Liverpool to start rebuilding their image once again.

“I’m looking forward to the FA Cup a lot, as well as the Champions League,” said the Dutch defender.

“There are still many games and plenty of opportunities for us to show why we are Liverpool and why we are champions.”

“Every competition is important, but the FA Cup is a meaningful trophy. Barnsley will come to Anfield this Monday, and I’m looking forward to that game. They will give everything to advance, and we must be ready for a big fight and seize the chance to close the game.”

The bitter memory still lingers for Liverpool fans when Barnsley eliminated the Reds at Anfield in 2008 with a last-minute winning goal by Brian Howard.

Although Barnsley currently sits 17th in League One and has lost 4 of their last 6 matches, Klopp’s crucial test is not just to win but to secure a convincing victory, acknowledging that recent team performances have not been as exciting as expected.
