Man Utd fans are hopeful as the "prospective new manager" has begun to take action following the club's imminent appointment.
On 12 Jan 2026 GMT+7, the Daily Mail, a leading British media outlet, reported the latest developments regarding the appointment of a new manager for Manchester United, the Premier League giant, following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim last week.
Michael Carrick, the former midfielder and fan favorite at Manchester United, has been reported by nearly all British media outlets as overtaking Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the club's legendary striker, to become the top favorite to serve as interim manager until the end of this season after both met with club executives.
Earlier reports indicated Manchester United planned to make a final decision today and appoint the interim manager to start on Wednesday, 14 Jan, allowing time to prepare the team ahead of the Manchester derby match at home against Manchester City on Saturday, 17 Jan.
However, the Daily Mail recently revealed that Michael Carrick will seek further negotiations with Manchester United, as he and his representatives are scheduled to meet the "Red Devils" executives to discuss finer details before officially accepting the interim manager role until the season's end.
Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher has acted as interim manager for the last two games but has yet to achieve a win, drawing 2-2 against Burnley in the Premier League and losing 1-2 at home to Brighton in the FA Cup third round.
Sources also disclosed that Ole Gunnar Solskjær has not been ruled out by Manchester United at this stage, following his meetings with CEO Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox on Saturday. However, Michael Carrick currently holds a stronger position after impressing in one-on-one talks on Thursday.
