Manchester United Finalizes New Manager Selection, Set to Appoint Within 48 Hours, Reveals Start Date

Manchester United has finalized the selection of their new manager and is preparing to appoint him within 48 hours, revealing the official start date.

On 12 January 2026, The Mirror and Daily Mail, two leading UK media outlets, reported that Manchester United, a giant of the English Premier League, has decided on a new manager following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim.

Initially, Manchester United called in Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, two former fan-favorite players and ex-coaches of the club, to meet with senior executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox to consider who would serve as interim manager until the end of the season.

According to recent sources, Manchester United has officially chosen Michael Carrick. The Mirror revealed that a key reason Ole Gunnar Solskjær was not selected is because several senior players opposed the Norwegian coach’s return for a second spell.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail disclosed that Manchester United is preparing to announce Michael Carrick as interim manager within the next 48 hours. After significant progress in negotiations, Carrick traveled today to discuss final details and finalize the agreement for him to take charge.

However, reports indicate that Manchester United may not officially announce Michael Carrick’s appointment today, as current talks focus on assembling Carrick’s backroom staff and settling some remaining details.

Nonetheless, Michael Carrick and his team are expected to begin managing Manchester United in training on Wednesday, 14 January, when players return after a two-day break, ahead of preparing for the Manchester derby match hosting Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, 17 January.
