Andrew Robertson emphasized that Dominic Szoboszlai's mistake was unacceptable, warning him not to get carried away. He also revealed that Szoboszlai quickly took responsibility by apologizing to his teammates immediately.
On 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Andrew Robertson, Liverpool's left-back, revealed that Dominic Szoboszlai apologized to his teammates in the dressing room right after his personal mistake almost made the Reds struggle in the FA Cup third round match at Anfield, where they beat Barnsley 4-1.
In that match, Liverpool took the lead with a brilliant goal from Szoboszlai, marking the 100th career goal for the Hungarian international midfielder. Jeremy Frimpong then increased the lead to 2-0. However, Szoboszlai made a mistake attempting a backheel pass inside his own penalty area, which allowed Adam Phillips, a former Liverpool youth player, to score and bring Barnsley back into the game.
Robertson admitted that this moment caused frustration among everyone in the team.
"At that moment, we all said something, but he realized it and apologized to the teammates during halftime."
"If there is anyone who should not be criticized this season, it is Dom. He gives 100 percent every game, but mistakes like this are unacceptable and we cannot let them happen, especially in big matches."
The Scottish left-back also pointed out that the error caused Liverpool to lose control of the game.
"At 2-0, we were controlling the situation, but when that happened, questions immediately arose. It was a clear individual mistake and opened the door for the opponent to come back."
In the end, Liverpool sealed the win with goals from substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, advancing to the fourth round to face Brighton & Hove Albion.
Robertson concluded by saying,
"Was it a gift to Barnsley? If I put it that way, it might be too polite. The frustrating thing is that before that, Dom made an incredible 60-yard sprint to chase the ball, earning applause from the Kop fans. I’m not sure if that moment made him overconfident."
"We can laugh about it now, but conceding a goal like that is unacceptable. Dom knows it well. He has been excellent all season, and he played well in this game, just losing focus for a moment — something we can’t afford to happen often."
