Uh-oh, Liverpool Faces Latest Bad News That Could Disrupt a Long-Standing Plan

Uh-oh, Liverpool faces the latest bad news that may disrupt a long-standing plan.

On 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Ben Jacobs, a well-known football transfer journalist, reported that Liverpool, currently 4th in the English Premier League, has received troubling news regarding their pursuit of Marc Guehi, captain and defender of Crystal Palace, whom they planned to sign as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool intended to sign Marc Guehi on a free transfer after his contract expires in June, having missed out on acquiring him last summer despite agreeing on a £35 million fee, because Crystal Palace pulled out at the last minute as they could not find a replacement in time.

However, Ben Jacobs recently stated that Manchester City is preparing to submit a bid for Marc Guehi in the January transfer window, having held talks with Crystal Palace over the past few days.

"Man City hopes that the £35 million price set by Crystal Palace will decrease as the transfer window progresses. Although Palace is willing to sell if suitable terms are met, the high asking price is intended to fund a replacement," he explained.

"Marc Guehi will become a free agent this summer and is content to finish the season before choosing a new club. Therefore, Man City must persuade him (both football-wise and financially) to move mid-season."

"Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested in signing him this summer. Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan have made inquiries as well. It is understood that Barcelona has discussed this matter, with Hansi Flick involved, but currently, there is no progress."
