Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, opened up ahead of leading his team to an away game against Manchester United in today's Premier League match.
Pep Guardiola, manager of the "Sky Blues" Manchester City, admitted he cannot predict the tactical plans of Michael Carrick, the interim manager of the "Red Devils" Manchester United, ahead of City’s away Premier League clash with United tonight. He stressed the importance of focusing on his own team’s preparations.
Pep said, “When you have more information about what the opposing manager is doing, you can provide your players with more details.”
“But when you don’t have information, you cannot give your players anything, so you must focus on yourself.”
“Maybe when the starting lineup is announced, we might get some idea. You might see tactics he used when managing Middlesbrough or during his time at Manchester United, but those tactics depend on the players, and the players he has now are different from those at Middlesbrough. So honestly, I don’t know what they will do.”
“For example, in a recent game against Chelsea under their new manager, the first half was completely different from the second. That’s why it’s about adapting and focusing on yourself.”
Although Carrick is a new opponent as a manager, Pep praised him as a player. Carrick played as a defensive midfielder, similar to Pep’s own playing position, and Pep believes players in that role often become the best coaches.
“I think maybe center-backs and defensive midfielders, because of their position, have a better overall vision than wingers.”
“I’m not saying wingers can’t read the game well, but it’s different. I can only say that Carrick was an excellent player.”
