Revealing Mark Guehi’s salary: Manchester City pays big, beyond what Liverpool could offer.
On 17 Jan 2026 GMT+7, a Premier League-shaking deal occurred when Manchester City, known as the "Sky Blues," agreed to sign England international defender Mark Guehi. Crystal Palace accepted an initial fee of £20 million. Guehi is City's second new signing in this transfer window, following Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
This deal has outpaced Liverpool, who had planned to sign Guehi on a free transfer after his contract expires in June. Liverpool missed out last summer despite agreeing on a £35 million fee, as Palace pulled out at the last minute, unable to find a replacement in time.
Recently, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook updated that Guehi will earn a salary around £300,000 per week, higher than the previously expected £200,000. Meanwhile, the £20 million fee could rise close to £30 million with add-ons included.
This salary level breaks the club’s previous ceiling, making it impossible for Liverpool to compete, as only two players currently earn over £300,000 per week at the club.
