Warning Issued! Steven Gerrard Sends Direct Message to Szoboszlai After Noticing Signs of Ego

Steven Gerrard acknowledged that Dominik Szoboszlai is delivering the most consistent performances of his career but cautioned that humility is the key to becoming a world-class footballer.

On 22 January 2026, Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as one of Liverpool's most consistent players this season, earning widespread praise. However, Steven Gerrard, the legendary former captain of the Reds, directly warned the young player that humility will determine whether he can reach world-class status.

The Hungarian midfielder has made the second-most appearances for Liverpool this season, behind only Virgil van Dijk. His versatility and energy in midfield have made him a key player in Jürgen Klopp's era.

The 25-year-old recently scored a beautiful free-kick in a draw at Marseille and is closing in on his personal record for most goals in a season for the club, needing just one more goal to match it.

However, Gerrard, a former Liverpool number 8, commented to TNT Sports that Szoboszlai has shown moments of "overconfidence" in some games and stressed that if not managed properly, this could become an obstacle.

"If he remains humble and continues to work hard on his game, eager to improve and grow, because no matter your age, you can always get better," Gerrard said.

"If he does these things correctly, he will definitely reach another level."

The former England midfielder also pointed out that in recent weeks, a "small ego" has appeared in Szoboszlai’s game, such as attempting a close-range backheel or taking penalties with excessive confidence.

Nevertheless, Gerrard remains fully confident in Szoboszlai's potential to reach the highest level.

"I believe there is world-class quality in him. He has shown it in some games this season, and this is the period where I see him playing most consistently."

"I enjoy watching him play; he is full of energy, works hard without the ball, and it would be a great shame if he doesn’t push himself to the next level because everything is already there."

The warning from the legendary number 8 could be an important lesson for Dominik Szoboszlai as he transitions from a "hot-form midfielder" to a long-term world-class pillar for Liverpool, provided he keeps his confidence on the right track.
