Manchester United fans are excited as the club discusses bringing back a former player, revealing one key factor that could help make this dream come true.
On 22 January 2026, Football Insider, a prominent English media outlet, reported that Manchester United plans to bring Mason Greenwood, the club's former academy product, back to play in the English Premier League.
Mason Greenwood, 24, had to leave Manchester United following strong public backlash due to a domestic abuse case involving his girlfriend, despite later reconciling and having a child together. He moved to Getafe in Spain's La Liga on loan in 2023.
Manchester United then sold Mason Greenwood to Olympique Marseille for £26 million. He has since performed impressively, scoring 42 goals and providing 12 assists in 63 matches, sharing the Ligue 1 top scorer award last season with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé, both netting 21 goals.
Recently, Football Insider revealed that "sources told Football Insider that Manchester United executives have held internal discussions about bringing Mason Greenwood back to the club."
"Manchester United included a buy-back clause when selling the 24-year-old winger to Marseille in the summer of 2024, allowing them to re-sign the forward at a price below his current market value."
Manchester United sold Mason Greenwood to Marseille below market value but secured several favorable conditions, including a 50% sell-on clause and a buy-back option for the future.
