Is It True or Just Rumor? Romano Speaks Out After Liverpools Reported Contact with Alonso

Fabrizio Romano quickly dispelled the rumor from Spain, clearly confirming that Liverpool has not contacted Xabi Alonso to take over from Jürgen Klopp despite the team's recent poor form.

On 26 Jan 2026, renowned transfer market journalist Fabrizio Romano updated the situation regarding Jürgen Klopp's future at Liverpool following rumors that the Reds are preparing to sack him and appoint former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso as his replacement.

Liverpool's performance has been disappointingly poor, having lost 2-3 away to Bournemouth in their latest Premier League match, extending their winless streak in the league to five games and dropping to 6th place in the standings.

Previously, Spanish media reported that Liverpool had contacted Xabi Alonso to offer him the managerial position in place of Klopp and indicated that the former Spanish midfielder showed interest in managing at Anfield.

However, Romano dismissed these rumors on his personal YouTube channel, confirming that to date there has been no official contact between Liverpool and Xabi Alonso or his representatives.

"At this moment, I am not aware of any official contact between Liverpool and Xabi Alonso or his agent. What I can confirm is that Alonso will return to coaching soon after parting ways with Real Madrid," Romano stated.

Although Jürgen Klopp recently led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season and still holds considerable credibility with the club, this season's performance has been well below standard, especially given the significant summer investment in new players.

As a result, the Dutch coach's future is under close scrutiny, and Xabi Alonso's name has resurfaced as a candidate, having been a previous target before Liverpool chose to appoint Klopp.

While no official negotiations have taken place yet, if Liverpool's form does not improve, it would not be surprising if the club's board begins considering new managerial options in the near future.
