Manchester United Legend Gary Neville Criticizes Liverpool’s Form Despite £450 Million Spending

Gary Neville, Manchester United legend, delivers harsh criticism! He slams Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool despite £450 million spending, but Liverpool’s form falters.

On 26 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Gary Neville, known for his outspoken views, sharply criticized Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. He rejected claims that the “Reds” are in a “transitional phase” after the team’s poor form, including a 2-3 away loss to Bournemouth that dropped them to 6th place in the league and extended their winless streak in the league to five matches.

Neville argued that the excuse of rebuilding the team doesn’t hold up because Liverpool spent over £450 million in the summer transfer window to bring in top players like Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Jeremie Frimpong. He said these signings were meant to "defend the title," not to build a new team from scratch.

Neville said, “I watch Liverpool’s games and I always think that when you’ve just won the league, you have full credit and almost nothing that can shake you. It’s not easy to say this is a transitional phase.”

"Jürgen Klopp won the title with that group of players last season. Over the past week, I’ve heard many from Liverpool, including the manager, say this is a transitional season. Forget it, I don’t buy that explanation.”

“You’ve spent more than £450 million. This is not a transitional season; this should be a season where you continue to fight for the title. Don’t rewrite history based on what everyone talked about last summer, including people outside Liverpool. I’m not saying Liverpool’s people or fans are overreacting.”

“Bringing in players like Ekitike, Wirtz, Isak, Frimpong, and Kerkz isn’t the market of a rebuilding team. This is reinforcements for a stable champion squad, which includes Salah and Van Dijk who have renewed contracts, plus McAllister, Grafenberg, Konate, and Alisson. This is not starting over.”

"I’ve heard talk about a transitional phase several times this week, but I haven’t heard everything. You can’t rewrite history."
