Bad news for Manchester United! The club of their target coach is moving fast, opening talks to extend his contract and prevent the Red Devils from swooping.
On 28 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Manchester United's hopes of signing Luis Enrique as their manager are fading as Paris Saint-Germain officially begins negotiations to extend the Spanish coach's contract beyond 2027.
According to French outlet Les Parisien, PSG has started discussions with Enrique's representatives even though his current contract lasts until June 2027, less than 18 months away. PSG wants to avoid uncertainty and sees contract renewal as an urgent priority to quash rumors of a Premier League move.
Enrique has been consistently linked with the Old Trafford managerial position, appearing alongside Mauricio Pochettino on the shortlist, but PSG's board is acting swiftly to retain him at the club.
The key reason is the success and stability he has brought, leading PSG to European trophies. In 2025, he was also acclaimed as the “Best Coach in the World” after guiding the team to six titles.
Enrique is central to the club's project, transitioning the team from the “Galacticos” era to a style emphasizing teamwork and youth development. He played a clear role in signing 18-year-old prospect Dro Fernandez from Barcelona, who signed a long-term deal until 2030.
He also works seamlessly with Luis Campos, the club's sporting advisor, who recently extended his contract to 2030. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi expressed full confidence and admitted that appointing Enrique was the best decision of his tenure.
