Vietz Speaks Frankly After Leading Liverpool to Comeback Win Over Newcastle, Praises One Player in Particular

"Conceded first, so what?" Florian Vietz spoke candidly after leading Liverpool to a comeback demolition of Newcastle, singling out one player for special praise.

On 1 February 2026, Florian Vietz, Liverpool's attacking midfielder, gave an interview following last night's English Premier League match in which Liverpool hosted and thrashed Newcastle United 4-1.

In this match, Florian Vietz provided an assist to Hugo Ekitike, who scored to equalize 1-1 in the 41st minute, then scored himself in the 67th minute to make it 3-1. His contributions helped Liverpool increase their points to 39, overtaking Manchester United who had 38 points, and move up temporarily to 5th place in the Premier League standings.

Florian Vietz spoke about Liverpool's comeback after falling behind, saying, "It was a great turnaround. When we conceded first at 0-1, we united and fought back. Nothing could have been better than that."

Regarding his improving performance at Liverpool, having scored 6 goals and made 8 assists since transferring from Bayer Leverkusen for a total fee of £116 million this season, Florian Vietz said, "I just enjoy scoring goals."

"As long as I can help the team win, I am happy. Celebrating my own goals is always the best. I’m glad to play here in front of the fans."

The German international also spoke about his chemistry with Hugo Ekitike, who scored twice in this match: "Everyone saw again just how much quality he has and what a great player he is. He’s very fast and finishes chances excellently. It’s a real joy to play alongside him."
