Liverpool is in talks to sign an attacking player to strengthen their squad before the winter transfer window closes.
On 1 Feb 2026 GMT+7, journalists David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, experts in the transfer market, both reported that Liverpool, a top Premier League club, is moving forward to sign Dutch national team right-back Lutsharel Geertruida before this winter's transfer deadline.
Liverpool is currently short of right-backs after Conor Bradley and Jeremy Frimpong suffered long-term injuries, forcing the team to rely on Dominic Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Curtis Jones as temporary solutions. However, manager Arne Slot wants a professional right-back as a replacement.
Recently, Fabrizio Romano stated, "Liverpool is negotiating to sign Lutsharel Geertruida as their new defender, and initial contact has been made with Sunderland."
"Since Arne Slot knows him well from their time together at Feyenoord, he is an appealing option. Liverpool is discussing the contract's terms and structure between the clubs. Slot is looking for a new right-back or center-back."
Meanwhile, David Ornstein revealed, "Liverpool is considering signing Lutsharel Geertruida. The club from Anfield has been given the opportunity, and talks are ongoing regarding a loan deal to replace Sunderland, who have Geertruida on loan from RB Leipzig."
"Sunderland is seeking a replacement in case the Dutch international player leaves."
Lutsharel Geertruida, 25, is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig this season. He has played 17 matches, starting 10 and coming off the bench in 7, but has been the second choice behind Nordi Mukiele. He can play as a right-back, center-back, and defensive midfielder.
