Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, expressed great satisfaction after his club succeeded in outbidding rivals to sign Jérémy Doku, the promising young defender from Rennes, praising him as a highly talented player.
Initially, Chelsea appeared to be the favorites to sign the 20-year-old French center-back, who is regarded as one of the most promising young players worldwide, with Chelsea manager Liam Rosier pushing hard to complete the deal.
However, Liverpool ultimately outpaced them to secure the signing at the end of the January transfer window for a total fee of £60 million (approximately 2.583 billion baht). Doku will remain playing in France until the season ends before moving to Anfield in the summer.
Slot said, "Of course, this is very pleasing. Firstly, because he is an extremely talented player. Secondly, because we were not the only club interested in him, so this is a great compliment to the team working hard to sign this player."
"He is another example of the model we use at this club: young, highly talented players, sometimes just starting their careers, sometimes a few years into their development."
"But they are usually young players who can develop and definitely help us both in the short and long term."
"We have signed many players like this, and as I have said many times, the club’s medium- to long-term future, and even the short term, is in a very good place."
Doku will strengthen Liverpool’s defense, which has struggled this season, conceding 33 goals in the Premier League.
