James Trafford admits he was unprepared to become the second-choice goalkeeper at Manchester City. Fans say his body language clearly shows he is unhappy with his backup status.
On 16 Feb 2026 GMT+7, James Trafford admitted in an interview that he was unprepared for returning to Manchester City as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Donnarumma after the 2-0 win over Salford City.
Trafford returned from Burnley for £31 million in July and started as the first-choice keeper for the first three Premier League matches of the season. However, his status changed after Donnarumma transferred from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the transfer window, resulting in Trafford not playing in league matches since. He acknowledged this was not the role he expected when signing.
"I did not expect this situation to happen, but since it has, I just have to move forward," Trafford said.
"I intend to work hard every day and see what happens. I will give my all."
Previously, there were rumors that Trafford—who refused a move to Newcastle to return to Manchester City—was guaranteed the number one spot under Pep Guardiola's management, but he confirmed this was not true.
This season, Trafford has mostly played in domestic cup matches and only one UEFA Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.
With the World Cup approaching, limited playing time could affect his chances of making the England national team. He confirmed he will strive to improve his skills and perform his best whenever given the opportunity.
