A leading UK media outlet has reported that Manchester United is looking to snatch a world champion midfielder from Liverpool.
On 17 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the Daily Mirror, a prominent UK media source, reported that Manchester United is considering the possibility of signing Alexis Mac Allister, a World Cup-winning midfielder from Liverpool, if the player becomes available in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The report states that the "Red Devils" are compiling a list of target midfielders, with executives at Old Trafford closely monitoring the situation of the Argentine international, amid growing speculation that he might reconsider his future with his current club.
Mac Allister, 27, remains under contract with Liverpool at Anfield until 2028. However, this season he has faced a dip in form and has yet to demonstrate the full potential he has shown previously.
Additionally, Manchester United is keeping an eye on other midfielders including Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Elliot Anderson.
However, directly signing a player from Liverpool is considered difficult due to the intense rivalry between the two clubs. Although players like Michael Owen and Paul Ince have played for both teams, the last direct transfer between the two occurred during Phil Chisnall's era in 1964.
Meanwhile, Mac Allister has expressed a desire to play in Spain at some point in his career. United also understands that securing a player of his caliber would likely depend on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Nevertheless, Fabrizio Romano, a leading transfer market journalist, has disputed these linking rumors as untrue.
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023 for a fee of £55 million and has been a key contributor to the team’s Premier League title last season.
