Carrick Has Made His Decision About Manchester United After Interim Coach Contract Ends

Carrick has made his decision regarding Manchester United once his interim coaching contract ends.

On 20 February 2026, Michael Carrick, interim manager of Manchester United, the fourth-ranked team in the English Premier League, gave a recent interview to BBC Sport on The Football Interview program about his future managing the "Red Devils."

Initially, Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick to manage the team until the end of this season, planning to hire an experienced coach as permanent manager in the upcoming summer. However, he has performed excellently, remaining unbeaten in his first five games (4 wins, 1 draw), including victories over top Premier League teams Manchester City and Arsenal.

This has increased media attention on Michael Carrick as a potential permanent manager for Manchester United, though there is still no clarity on whether the club’s executives will offer him the position.

During the interview, host Mark Chapman of The Football Interview asked, “Do you want to continue this job (Manchester United manager)? I know you probably have an answer in mind, but I think you might be thinking, ‘Whatever will be, will be,’ right?”

Michael Carrick replied that he does not close the door on becoming the permanent manager. If Manchester United trusts him, he is happy to continue in the role. "It’s not a fixed answer yet. For me, this is the most important role. I really enjoy it. I love what I do."

"I’m lucky and honored to be in this position, but it’s not just because I believe I can do it and I’m here to do it. I mentioned when I came in that there’s also a sense of belonging."

"Understanding the role, growing up with the club, being here, loving the club, being a fan—all of that is one thing. But really, now I’m here to work, to build a good and successful team."

"I’m not the one to decide how long it will last, but I love being here, and while I am here, I will give everything I can. I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club. I believe that’s how it should be."
