Former Sir Alex Ferguson assistant René Meulensteen revealed why Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is not yet good enough to guard the net for Manchester United, but praised one top goalkeeper in the same league.
On 21 Feb 2026 GMT+7, René Meulensteen, former assistant to legendary Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson, explained why Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is not yet ready to be the first-choice keeper for Manchester United, while praising one other league goalkeeper.
Last summer, Senne Lammens transferred from Royal Antwerp to Old Trafford for a fee of £18.1 million, approximately 760 million baht. He quickly displaced Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır to become the backup, while André Onana was loaned out.
René Meulensteen stated, “Although Senne Lammens has shown quite impressive performances, I think he is not yet at the level Manchester United demands. I believe he still has weaknesses. Every successful top team usually has a top-class goalkeeper, like Gianluigi Donnarumma demonstrated with his save off a deflected shot against Liverpool. Without that save, the ball would have gone in and the game might have ended differently. That is the kind of save a good goalkeeper can make. As for Senne Lammens, honestly, I'm not sure if he can perform at that level yet.”
