Romano Confirms Liverpools Decision on Alonso Amid Reports of Him Replacing Klopp

Romano himself reports that Liverpool has made a decision regarding Alonso amid rumors he would replace Klopp as manager.

On 12 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Fabrizio Romano, a football transfer market expert and journalist, revealed the latest about Liverpool, the Premier League club, following rumors that they had reached an agreement with Xabi Alonso to bring him in as their new manager.

Xabi Alonso has been increasingly linked with Liverpool since his dismissal as Real Madrid manager in January and is currently unemployed. Meanwhile, Liverpool's current manager, Jürgen Klopp, has delivered unimpressive results.

Recently, Klopp led Liverpool to a 0-1 away defeat against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg, repeating the same scoreline as a loss in the group stage's second match last September. This puts the Premier League champions at risk of finishing the season empty-handed.

Liverpool's current situation leaves them competing for two trophies: they must overturn the deficit against Galatasaray in the Champions League second leg, and in the FA Cup quarter-finals, they have been drawn against Manchester City. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, they sit sixth, risking missing out on next season's Champions League qualification.

This has sparked rumors that Liverpool will hire Xabi Alonso to replace Klopp, with reports claiming a three-year contract has already been agreed. However, Fabrizio Romano has promptly addressed these claims.

Romano stated, “I've seen many questions in chats about whether it's true that Xabi Alonso has signed a three-year contract with Liverpool. Currently, there is no agreement in negotiations between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. I can assure you there has been no decision made.”

“At the end of the season, Liverpool will conduct an internal review involving players, the manager, and everyone in the club. There will be discussions to assess the season, but as of now, no decisions or agreements have been made with Xabi Alonso.”

“Of course, he is highly regarded as a former Liverpool player and a top coach. Therefore, the relationship between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool is positive, but there is no agreement today.”
