Clear decision by Klopp after Liverpool's UCL defeat before meeting Spurs in the Premier League.
On 13 March 2026, Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool's manager, spoke at the press conference ahead of the 30th Premier League match of the 2025-26 season, hosting Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 15 March.
Before the match, Liverpool ranks 6th in the Premier League with 48 points, level with Chelsea in 5th, and just 3 points behind Manchester United in 3rd and Aston Villa in 4th. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur sit 16th with 29 points, only one point above the relegation zone.
Currently, Liverpool is out of the Premier League title race but still contending for two trophies: the FA Cup, facing Manchester City in the quarterfinals, and the UEFA Champions League, where they have a chance to overturn their 0-1 home defeat by Galatasaray in the Round of 16 first leg.
At the same time, Liverpool must fight for a Champions League spot through the final nine Premier League matches. Klopp was asked about Liverpool's objectives for the remainder of the season.
The Liverpool manager replied that he aims to achieve all remaining goals this season, but most importantly, the players must be ready for every challenge. "What I want is for every player to get the most out of training and every match we play from now until season’s end. That is my goal, and it should be the players’ goal as well."
"And I am 100 percent confident that is the players’ goal because it’s the only way to maximize what we have. What lies ahead is not always easy to predict because sometimes you need a bit of luck."
"For example, last season in the Champions League Round of 16, it went to penalties. We almost beat Paris Saint-Germain but lost, and they went on to win the Champions League."
"So the difference at the level we play, between the Premier League and the Champions League, is very small. But we have to fight for those differences every day to make them grow. That is the goal. It was set at the start of the season, and now it’s even more important."
"(Regarding setting high standards last season) I think Liverpool’s standards have always been high. They have been and will continue to be high, which is good. We are a top club, and people around expect high standards, but we also set those standards ourselves."
"Yes, last season we achieved one of our goals: winning the league and nearly winning the League Cup, where we lost in the final to Newcastle."
"This season, of course, we cannot win the league again, but we are still competing in two competitions: the Champions League and the FA Cup."
