Dortmund comes full circle, warmly welcoming Jadon Sancho back to the team for the third time.
Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund is advancing negotiations to bring Jadon Sancho back to the squad after his contract with Manchester United is set to expire this summer. However, the English winger will likely need to accept a substantial wage reduction for the deal to materialize.
The report states that Dortmund's head coach, Niko Kovac, is open to bringing Sancho back, while club executives are increasingly supporting the idea and have already contacted the player's agent, although they have yet to speak directly with Sancho.
Sancho is approaching the end of his contract with Manchester United in a few months, five years after leaving Dortmund for a €85 million transfer in 2021. His time in England did not meet expectations, resulting in three loan spells with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.
Under Kovac's team plans for next season, Dortmund intends to shift toward more wing play rather than their previous focus on attacking midfielders. This approach aligns well with Sancho's strengths, increasing the likelihood of his third return to the team.
Nonetheless, a major obstacle remains his salary. Currently, Sancho earns about £250,000 per week, but to return to the Bundesliga, he might need to accept a pay cut of more than half, as Dortmund operates with a limited wage structure.
During his loan back to Dortmund in the 2023-24 season, Manchester United contributed roughly £100,000 per week toward his wages, and Sancho played a part in helping the team reach the UEFA Champions League final.
If the transfer goes through, Sancho will still need to prove his discipline and consistency to fit into Kovac's strict team philosophy.
