Unforgettable: Ralf Rangnick Reflects on Structural Changes Manchester United Needed During His Interim Tenure

Unforgettable, Ralf Rangnick, the German coach, reflects on the structural issues Manchester United had to fix during his interim management.

On 19 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Ralf Rangnick, the German coach, recalled the structural changes that "the Red Devils" Manchester United, the famous English Premier League club, needed to address from his perspective during his interim management period, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former Norwegian manager who had been dismissed earlier.

Ralf Rangnick said, "Some people may misunderstand what I mean by restructuring Manchester United, especially the major changes. It’s not just about changing players; it involves the club owners and the entire structure above the team."

"You can change the manager every season, but that won’t solve anything because the real problem goes deeper. Whenever there’s a change, you see immediate improvement, but sometimes it’s temporary and then things revert. For me, it’s not about rebuilding the team over five years but fixing the top-level structure first, and then they can compete for titles again. But maybe some people don’t want to hear that."

Ralf Rangnick served as Manchester United's interim manager from December 2021 to May 2022, a total of 179 days. He managed 29 matches with 11 wins, 10 draws, and 8 losses, achieving a 37.9% win rate. The team finished 6th in the 2021-22 Premier League and exited in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. After the season ended, he did not continue as an advisor as per the original agreement but instead moved on to coach the Austria national team.
