Steven Gerrard, former Liverpool captain and midfielder, spoke candidly after returning to play in a charity match at Anfield, where Liverpool Legends drew 2-2 with Dortmund Legends last Saturday night.
Gerrard, aged 45, said, “Of course we came here for a good cause. Today felt like a family day for all of us. Sixty thousand fans came to support us again, which is amazing. I’m truly happy to be here.”
“My mind still works as fast as before, but my body might be two or three seconds slower! So there were some frustrating moments, but I’m glad we played together with quality today.”
“Thiago deserved the Man of the Match award. It’s a shame we couldn’t secure a win for the fans, but it was still an amazing experience.”
“It feels wonderful. The last time I played football and saw these guys was a year ago. That’s too long. Everyone is busy with their own lives, but when you get invited to an event like this, you can hardly wait to meet up. We are one big family. The club always supports its former players excellently.”
“Sixty thousand fans for a friendly game—no other club in the world does this. What matters most to me is where the money goes. It’s used for great charitable causes to help many people in need, and that’s why we’re all here today.”
