For the first time, Mohamed Salah reveals the background behind his amicable departure from Liverpool despite previous issues with Klopp (video).
On 2 May 2026 GMT+7, Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian national team striker, revealed that he received advice from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard before announcing his departure from the Premier League club at the end of this season.
The 33-year-old Mohamed Salah announced in March that he would leave Liverpool, concluding a memorable nine-year career at Anfield. During his time, he helped the team win two Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League, scoring 257 goals and providing 122 assists in 440 appearances.
Previously, Mohamed Salah almost decided to leave Liverpool during the winter transfer window after having conflicts with manager Jürgen Klopp. However, in a recent reveal on TNT Sports' The Breakdown, he stated that Steven Gerrard gave him valuable advice over dinner to help him find the right solution.
Salah said, "Yes, I am happy now. I remember when we talked, and I really appreciated it. I think many don’t know that you (Gerrard) came to my house. I hope the dinner was delicious!"
"We had a good conversation, and you shared your thoughts, which I truly appreciated. Yes, I’m glad to leave the club in the best possible way, and I think that’s also what you told me—to leave in the way you want. I still remember those words. So yes, I’m happy with it... it’s time for me to go."
"I didn’t get old overnight. Last season, I had a great season. I think I still have a lot to show, and I will see what’s best for me. But having passed this season, I feel, ‘Okay, this is the right thing to do now,’ and I’m at peace with it."
"This season has been difficult for all of us, and yes, I don’t want to say much."
