Manchester United Executives Decide on Manager Issue After Securing Top 5 Premier League and UCL Spot

Manchester United executives have made a decision regarding the club's managerial position after securing a top 5 Premier League finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

On 14 May 2026, Simon Stone and Harry Poole, two well-known BBC Sport journalists, reported the latest situation at Manchester United concerning the appointment of a permanent manager. This follows Michael Carrick leading the team to secure a top 5 finish in the English Premier League, guaranteeing a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Since Michael Carrick took over from Rúben Amorim on 13 January, Manchester United have won 10 and lost only 2 of 15 Premier League matches. The team now sits third in the Premier League table, above Liverpool, prompting calls to consider a permanent managerial contract.

Recently, Simon Stone and Harry Poole revealed on BBC Sport that Manchester United’s senior executives plan to propose Michael Carrick’s name to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for consideration to be promoted from interim manager to permanent manager.

Initially, Manchester United planned to consider the permanent manager appointment after the season ended, with rumors linking them to several high-profile coaches such as Julian Nagelsmann (Germany national team), Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Marco Silva (Fulham), and Mauricio Pochettino (United States national team).

However, sources now believe that CEO Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox have concluded that Michael Carrick is the most suitable candidate for the role and will inform Sir Jim Ratcliffe of their decision this week.

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and minority shareholders agree, Manchester United will begin formal negotiations with Michael Carrick before confirming his future at the club.
