Michael Carrick, manager of the "Red Devils" Manchester United, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance after defeating Atletico Madrid, a strong La Liga team from Spain, 2-1 to win the 2026 Snapdragon Cup pre-season tournament.
Two crucial goals from Brian Embolo helped Manchester United come from behind to beat Atletico Madrid at Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
After the match, Carrick said, “I enjoyed this game. I think there were many positives we are looking to build on from the past seven months. I believe there are many encouraging signs for us. It might not be exactly where we want to be yet, but there are several positive takeaways from this game both individually and as a team overall. The senior players looked strong and fit, and the younger players performed very well.”
“Spirit and unity are very important for the team. It’s great to see the youngsters naturally getting along and enjoying being together. Overall, we looked strong as a team, which is always the most important thing, along with the individual performances from the young players who came on and made an impact.”
“Having no injuries is hugely important. We need to balance heavy player usage with protecting their bodies. They are currently in good condition. This is part of learning and development. While we are preparing for the upcoming season, it is still a long season ahead, and we will face challenges, have to adapt at times, and try to plan things that will carry us to the finish line.”
“This is a fantastic group to work with in terms of spirit, collaboration, helping and advising each other. That’s what made today very satisfying because it’s many of the things we ask of them. We enjoy working together, and I am really looking forward to the new season.”
