Official: The world's 4th richest person has bought Liverpool shares, but there are two unfortunate aspects.
On 15 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the owner of Liverpool, a prominent Premier League club, agreed to sell one-third of its shares to a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's owner, confirmed in a statement that it had officially reached an agreement to sell a strategic minority stake, approximately one-third of the club, valued at £1.65 billion (74.03 billion baht) to 1892 Holdings.
The investment group is led by Amit Bhatia, a British-Indian billionaire businessman, along with Eduardo Saverin, a billionaire co-founder of Facebook.
Amit Bhatia is set to become Liverpool's vice chairman and join the expanded new board of directors, pending regulatory approval.
Bhatia is the son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, an Indian billionaire, and previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before selling all his shares last month.
Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos, the American entrepreneur and Amazon founder, currently the world's 4th richest person with a net worth estimated at $256 billion (about £192 billion or 8.62 trillion baht), is involved in this investment.
This marks Jeff Bezos’s first step into sports ownership; however, he will not join Liverpool's board of directors.
Brian Bohn, founder of the K5 Sports venture capital firm through which Bezos is investing, along with Saverin’s wife, Ellen, will serve on Liverpool's board alongside Bhatia.
BBC Sport has learned that this transaction and investment will not affect Liverpool's transfer market strategy this season, and there will be no additional or separate budget allocated for new signings.
However, this share purchase agreement values Liverpool FC at between £5 billion and £6 billion (224.39 to 269.26 billion baht).
