Unveiling the Deep-Rooted Dark Arts: New "Premier League" Rules for the 2026-27 Season - What Are They? Let's Find Out.
On 20 Aug 2026 GMT+7, we delve into the new rules of the English Premier League, the world's top football competition, for the 2026-27 season. Many of these new measures were trialed during the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, targeting time-wasting, feigned injuries, and other problematic incidents from the past.
Here are six new rules set to apply in the English Premier League 2026-27 season. Let's take a look. The opening match features the "Gunners" Arsenal, led by Spanish coach Mikel Arteta, facing the newly promoted "Sky Blues" Coventry City, champions of the 2025-26 Championship, tomorrow night.
1.) No More Time-Wasting : Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds via the nearest exit. If they exceed this, their team must play with 10 men for 1 minute temporarily. There is an exception if the player is injured.
2.) 5-Second Countdown Rule : Applies to throw-ins and goal kicks. If the time is exceeded, possession switches to the opposing team. If the goalkeeper takes too long to take a goal kick, the opponents are awarded a corner kick immediately.
3.) Feigned Injuries Beware : Injured players must leave the field for 1 minute, increased from the previous 30 seconds. Even if the referee stops play because a player has fallen and no treatment is given, that player must still leave the field.
4.) Controlling Goalkeeper Theatrics : If the goalkeeper calls for a doctor, one outfield player chosen by the team must leave the field for 1 minute. The team has 10 seconds to inform the fourth official who will leave; if not specified in time, the team captain must leave instead.
5.) Clear Rules on Handling the Ball in the Penalty Area : If the goalkeeper kicks the ball and a player uses their hand to catch it afterward, a penalty is awarded immediately since play has started. If the goalkeeper uses their hands to receive a back-pass from a teammate, a double free-kick is awarded as per standard rules.
6.) Upgraded VAR : VAR’s authority is expanded to review cases such as second yellow cards retrospectively and to check fouls before set pieces that lead to goals, penalties, or disciplinary actions.
