Quality free agents exist! Chelsea has reached out to Wijnaldum to strengthen their midfield.
French media FootMercato reported that Chelsea, a Premier League giant, has contacted Georginio Wijnaldum, former Liverpool midfielder, to join the team on a free transfer since he is a free agent.
On the final day of the 2026 summer transfer window, Chelsea decided to sell Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million and sought a new midfielder before the window closed, approaching Arsenal's Martin Subimendi and nearly signing Monaco's Lamine Kamara, but the Ligue 1 club withdrew an hour before the deadline.
However, the latest reports state Chelsea has contacted Wijnaldum after the 35-year-old became unattached following the expiration of his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittifaq at the end of last season.
Although the summer transfer window closed last Tuesday, Premier League clubs can still sign players without a club.
Wijnaldum was a key part of Liverpool's success under Jürgen Klopp, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League. He then moved to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2021 before transferring to Saudi Arabia two years later.
Last season, Wijnaldum scored 17 goals and provided 7 assists in 34 appearances for Al-Ittifaq.
If he joins Chelsea, Wijnaldum will reunite with former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who joined Stamford Bridge on a free transfer in August.
