Carrick Decides on Manchester United Captain Issue After Dropping Bruno Over Tactical Criticism

Carrick has made his decision regarding the Manchester United captaincy issue after dropping Bruno Fernandes for criticizing tactics.

On 30 October 2026, Michael Carrick, Manchester United's manager, spoke openly for the first time after reports emerged that he had a discussion with Bruno Fernandes, the midfield captain, to clear up lingering issues before their English Premier League Week 9 away game against Chelsea on Saturday, 31 October.

In the most recent match, Michael Carrick decided to make Bruno Fernandes a substitute in the 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth after the Portuguese international criticized the tactics used in the UEFA Champions League game where they were thrashed 1-4 away at Como.

The loss to Bournemouth has put Carrick's position under serious threat as Manchester United dropped to 16th in the Premier League standings. However, the 45-year-old coach remains in charge for the upcoming match against Chelsea on Saturday.

While it remains to be seen whether Bruno Fernandes will return to the starting lineup, the two have since met to reconcile at Carrington training ground on Tuesday, seeking a way forward together.

The Manchester United manager stated there is no issue requiring a new decision about whether Bruno Fernandes will continue as team captain: "We have a shared understanding regarding the situation of the team and this club."

"He is a key player in this squad. He has been as he always was, and will continue to be. We need to make changes and push everything in a better direction."

"He is fully committed to this club and determined to help improve the situation. There is no problem at all on that front."

"For me, nothing has changed. The decision at the time was appropriate for the game against Bournemouth, and that is all."

"He has led the team very well over many games and years, and he will continue to do so. There is absolutely no issue regarding that."
