Fourteen years from his days as a player to becoming a coach, Arsenal's Premier League victory at Anfield in England had to come under the leadership of Mikel Arteta.
On 2 September 2012, Arsenal last secured a win by defeating Liverpool at Anfield, then managed by legendary French coach Arsène Wenger. Arsenal won 2-0 with goals from Lukas Podolski in the 31st minute and Santi Cazorla in the 53rd minute.
In that match, Mikel Arteta started as a defensive midfielder, controlling the game alongside Abou Diaby, who impressed and earned the Man of the Match award. Little did anyone expect that this would be Arsenal's last Premier League victory at Anfield for nearly 14 years.
Since then, Arsenal suffered 8 defeats and managed only 5 draws at Anfield, including a stretch of 6 consecutive losses at this stadium. Anfield proved to be a haunted ground for them, with very few positive results over more than a decade.
Fast forward 14 years, Mikel Arteta returned to Anfield as Arsenal’s coach and led the team to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool, thanks to Kai Havertz's goal in the 16th minute. This win helped the reigning Premier League champions from the 2025-26 season rise to the top of the 2026-27 league table after 9 matches, clearly marking them as strong title contenders for the season.
