Liverpool Faces PSG in UCL Quarterfinals: Revisiting a Troubling Rivalry That Has Shaken the Reds

Liverpool faces Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, revisiting a tricky rival that has caused the Reds to falter with fluctuating form.

On 19 Mar 2026 GMT+7, representatives from the Premier League demonstrated their champion quality by thrashing Galatasaray 4-0 at home, winning 4-1 on aggregate to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, where they will face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain once again.

This meeting with PSG marks a true turning point for the Reds. Since last season’s round of 16 when Liverpool was eliminated by the French club, the team from Anfield has clearly lost its footing. PSG has become a "painful wound" causing a prolonged slump.

Just five days after that defeat, Liverpool played the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley but unfortunately lost 1-2.

In the next five Premier League matches, results were mixed: a 1-0 win over Everton, a 2-3 loss to Fulham, victories against West Ham 2-1 and Leicester City 1-0, and a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur to clinch the league title at Anfield—the first home celebration since 1990.

However, after securing the title, Liverpool’s form collapsed in the final four matches of the season, failing to win any: losing 1-3 to Chelsea, drawing 2-2 with Arsenal, losing 2-3 to Brighton, and drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace.

Entering the 2025/26 season, the situation worsened despite massive investments exceeding £400 million and signing stars like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Liverpool lost four consecutive Premier League games (to Chelsea, Manchester United, Brentford, and Crystal Palace)—a streak not seen since 2021—pushing their overall loss rate across all competitions since the PSG defeat to 40%.

Nonetheless, Liverpool has begun showing signs of recovery after a long period of instability by routing Galatasaray 4-0, overturning the situation to reach the quarterfinals. They now prepare to seek revenge against PSG again this April.
