Arsenal Step Aside as PSG Aims to Create New History After Reaching UEFA Champions League Final

Arsenal step aside as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) aims to create new history after reaching the UEFA Champions League final.

On 7 May 2026, following the UEFA Champions League 2025-26 semi-final second leg, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, leaders of France's Ligue 1, secured their place in the final after a 1-1 away draw against Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga leaders from Germany.

With a 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern, PSG advances to defend their UEFA Champions League title, where they will face Arsenal, the English Premier League leaders, at the Puskás Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, 30 May.

This gives PSG, managed by Spanish coach Luis Enrique, a chance to make new history as only the second team to successfully defend the European Cup under the "UEFA Champions League" name, which was adopted in 1992.

The first team to defend the UEFA Champions League title successfully was Spanish La Liga giant Real Madrid, achieving three consecutive wins under the leadership of French coach Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018.

Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain is the first French club to reach the final of this competition three times, whether under the name European Cup or UEFA Champions League, following their runner-up finish in 2020 and their championship in 2025.

The other two French teams to have reached the European Cup/UEFA Champions League final are Saint-Étienne (1976 - runner-up) and Olympique Marseille (1991 - runner-up, 1993 - champion).
