It is understood that Carrick's future at Manchester United is becoming uncertain after the team suffered a heavy 1-4 away defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday night, resulting in a seven-match winless streak across all competitions.
Calls for Carrick's dismissal as Manchester United manager have been growing louder on social media after the game, and the club is preparing to handle the situation.
Reports state that Nagelsmann has emerged as a top candidate for Manchester United to replace Carrick. Nagelsmann is currently unemployed after resigning as Germany's national team coach following their round of 32 exit at the 2026 World Cup. He is interested in taking on the challenge with Manchester United for the opportunity to manage in the English Premier League.
Nagelsmann, 39, who led Bayern Munich to the 2021-22 Bundesliga title, has attracted interest from Manchester United's senior management, as he was previously considered before Carrick was appointed permanent manager in May.
Besides Nagelsmann, Manchester United has also been linked with Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea coach who is interested in managing the club but has not yet been contacted by them. Fabian Hertha, Brighton's manager, is also another option being considered.
