On 7 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, mocked a transgender athlete while ridiculing Iman Kelif, the Algerian female boxer and 2024 Olympic gold medalist in the women's 66-kilogram category, saying she is not a woman. This remark has sparked widespread discussion on social media recently.
Previously, Iman Kelif's gender identity was debated because she has an intersex condition, resulting in higher than normal male hormone levels and an XY chromosome. However, she was allowed to compete as a female because her passport lists her gender as female.
Back in February last year, Donald Trump, then President of the United States, signed an order banning athletes born male from participating in any women's sports competitions. At the time, he stated that he would expedite the implementation to complete the changes before the 2028 Olympics, which the U.S. will host in Los Angeles, California, from 14 to 30 July 2028.
Donald Trump justified the order by saying that the conflicts in women's sports have ended with this executive order I signed. My administration will not stand by while men take advantage of women. From now on, women's sports will be exclusively for women competitors.
