Somrak Points Out That Boxers Are Not Always at Their Best but Must Fight for Their Families (Video)

Somrak understands that boxers are not always at their best but must fight for their families.

On 1 May 2026, Somrak Kamsing, the Thai Olympic gold medalist amateur boxer hero, released a video discussing the life of boxers who may sometimes be unprepared but still have to fight to provide for their families.

Somrak said, "I have been boxing since I was a child, having fought over 500 Muay Thai bouts and lost about 16 times. A boxer's life is a struggle because 99.99% come from poor backgrounds. Therefore, every fight means a lot. Sometimes there’s a scheduled fight but the boxer is sick, or there are problems causing incomplete training, yet they still have to fight to earn money to support their families. Sometimes they don’t even tell their camp leaders. Sometimes they arrive at the ring with a fever and headache but still perform fully because they want to earn money for their families."

"When you get to the ring, you have to say that your training was good. If you say you didn’t train well, people will try to take advantage, and if you lose, they accuse you of throwing the fight. There’s a high chance of being kicked out of the ring. If you’re sick, you have to keep it to yourself and fight as your duty for the fight purse. In the past, I earned 10,000 baht per fight. Even when I had a fever, I forced myself to fight. When I earned the money, I sent 7,000–8,000 baht to my mother and kept 2,000–3,000 baht for myself. This is a boxer’s life. So many people may not understand that boxers are not always perfect; sometimes they are stressed about many things but have to fight to support their families."

Some boxing fans commented that Somrak’s words were encouragement for Rodtang Jitmuangnon, with mixed opinions both agreeing and disagreeing.

Rodtang faced personal problems outside the ring before his fight against Takeru Segawa on 29 April at ONE Samurai 1. He admitted he didn’t train fully due to various issues before losing by TKO in the 5th round.
