Learning from defeat!! The curtain has now fallen.
The Continental Futsal Championship 2026 at the Nonthaburi Provincial Gymnasium has officially concluded.
The team that suffered the most damage was none other than our host team, the Thai national futsal team!
After seeming to have one hand on the championship trophy,
at halftime of Match 3, leading the Vietnamese futsal squad 3-0,
the entire hall was ready to celebrate their third title.
However, unexpectedly, the Vietnamese team staged a stunning comeback in the second half,
equalizing at 3-3 with ease.
This revived the Russian 'White Bears,' who had looked down and out, giving them renewed hope for the final game.
Russia, having struggled earlier in the tournament, suddenly displayed world-class form,
living up to their status as the world's 7th ranked team in the championship decider, leaving us overwhelmed.
They scored relentlessly, crushing the Thai team 7-1.
What seemed like a certain championship turned into a disappointing third-place finish.
The European 'White Bears' claimed the title, while Vietnam secured the runner-up spot.
So what happened to the Thai futsal team?
Why did their impressive form, strong in the first two matches,
where they convincingly defeated New Zealand and Afghanistan,
start to falter in the game against Vietnam, a fellow ASEAN rival?
Thailand initially maintained their 'superb' form, leading by three goals,
making many confident they would soon be celebrating with the trophy.
But in the second half, their heroics faded and they became the 'villains' of the match.
Vietnam adjusted tactics, using power play to claw back goal by goal until the shocking 3-3 draw.
What was expected to be a championship run turned into a disappointing loss of focus heading into the final match.
It appeared Thailand was unprepared to face Russia.
Ultimately, a team struggling met one revitalized from the brink,
resulting in the Thai futsal team, despite being hosts and favorites,
suffering a surprisingly heavy defeat and losing their form entirely.
It is said the team's crushing loss was due not only to the mental impact from the draw with Vietnam,
but also the simultaneous injuries to key defenders Narongsak Wingwon and Ronachai Jungwongsuk,
which complicated the starting lineup decisions for the final game.
Everything seemed out of sync, causing their performance to plummet, unlike the Russians who peaked perfectly for the finale.
What happened at the Continental Championship is invaluable experience for the new generation of Thai futsal players,
as well as coach Rakphon Sainetrngam, known as 'Coach Mee,' to study carefully
and seriously improve the team's weaknesses.
Looking on the bright side, losing this warm-up tournament is not too damaging,
but for the upcoming Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2026 in Saudi Arabia later this year,
our performance must improve significantly.
A major weakness that led to conceding goals was poor power play execution both offensively and defensively,
which Coach Mee clearly recognizes and must urgently fix.
Remember, in 2027 the Asian Futsal qualifiers for the World Cup finals will begin again.
Planning, preparation, and training camps must be thorough and appropriate.
Mistakes are acceptable, but missing out on the World Cup ticket is not an option.
