Hun Sen Responds Amid Drama Over 2025 SEA Games in Thailand

Hun Sen, the Cambodian leader, hopes Thailand will organize the 2025 SEA Games well.

On 7 Dec 2025 GMT+7, ahead of the 33rd SEA Games hosted by Thailand from 9-20 Dec, there has been heavy criticism over event management, especially the readiness of venues, despite several years of preparation time.

Cambodia has reduced the number of athletes and staff attending the SEA Games in Thailand to fewer than 200, canceling participation in major sports such as football and volleyball due to security concerns following clashes near the Thai-Cambodian border and flooding problems in southern Thailand.

Hun Sen, Cambodia's leader, sent a message about the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, expressing the desire for a well-organized event rather than focusing solely on defeating Cambodia.

“I hope Thailand will do well in the 33rd SEA Games and manage the flooding problems effectively, rather than focusing only on winning or losing against Cambodia and Myanmar. I reserve the right to respond to protect Cambodia’s dignity and to inform both Cambodian and Thai people,” he said.
