The Queen Leads Thai Athletes to Two Consecutive Wins, SEA Games 2025 Sailing Team Rises to First Place

On 16 December 2025 at 09:57 GMT+7, Her Majesty the Queen traveled to Ocean Marina Pattaya Hotel in Sattahip District, Chonburi Province, to receive a briefing on the daily sailing competition and to participate in the second day of sailing races, competing in races 4 and 5 in the SSL 47 keelboat category at the 33rd SEA Games held from 15 to 18 December.

Today, Her Majesty the Queen also took on a vital role aboard the boat as a strategist, planning the team's gameplay to align with the sea's wind and wave conditions. She served as the navigator, a crucial position responsible for steering the boat correctly to catch the wind efficiently, allowing the boat to swiftly tack towards the buoy. The SSL 47 keelboat is a large sailing vessel, 47 feet long, with three sails: the mainsail (main large sail), jib sail (front sail), and spinnaker (balloon sail). When sailing close to the wind near the buoy, the spinnaker bearing the Thai national flag must be deployed quickly and then equally swiftly furled to avoid contact with the water, which would slow the boat.

At 10:37 GMT+7, Her Majesty the Queen proceeded to the Ocean Marina Yacht Club Pattaya pier to lead the Thai national sailing team number 6 out to compete in races 4 and 5, alongside representatives from four other countries: Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Myanmar. The five boats fiercely contested the races in the Gulf of Thailand amid swiftly intensifying and strong wind and wave conditions.

Throughout the competition, Her Majesty the Queen flawlessly performed her assigned duties on the boat and was a key force supporting every team member in adapting to various situations, including managing the sails and helping to balance the boat by hanging off the side to prevent capsizing from the wind's force. This demonstrated advanced skills in strength, precision, and teamwork. Unlike TP52 boats, the SSL boats lack safety ropes, making every moment of hanging off the boat extremely hazardous.

On the second day of racing, in races 4 and 5, the Thai national sailing team crossed the finish line first in both races, finishing 40 seconds ahead of second-place Philippines in race 4, and one minute ahead of second-place Malaysia in race 5.

This performance puts the Thai sailing team at the top of the standings with points from 5 of 8 races completed, holding a total of 7 penalty points. Malaysia is second with 12 penalty points, and Myanmar is third with 15. In the 33rd SEA Games, the sailing team with the fewest penalty points will claim the gold medal in the SSL Mixed category.

Reporters noted that the event organizers installed a large screen at the Ocean Marina Pattaya pier, the competition venue, allowing the public and tourists to closely watch and cheer for the sailing athletes competing in the 33rd SEA Games.

The public can continue to support and cheer for the Thai national sailing team in the 33rd SEA Games via the Star Sailors League YouTube channel.
