
Shocking: The Thai women's futsal team lost the SEA Games title for the first time, defeated on penalties by Indonesia after a fierce draw.
On 16 Dec 2025 GMT+7 at 16:30, at BTU HALL, Bangkokthonburi University, the women's futsal semifinal of the 33rd SEA Games took place between Thailand, ranked 8th in the world, and Indonesia, ranked 18th.
Thailand finished as Group A champions, while Indonesia advanced as Group B runners-up. Coach O Thanathorn Santhanaprasit started with Sasiprapa Suksan (GK), Jenjira Bubpha, Areeya Saeten, Natthamon Ajkla, and Darika Pienphayalun as the first five players.
The game started with Indonesia scoring in the first minute when Bangkun Febrina broke down the flank and assisted Rosita Igeu, who scored to make it 1-0.
Thailand then pressed hard, and at the 5th minute, Areeya Saeten made a run and passed to Jenjira Bubpha, whose shot was saved and went out for a corner.
At the 8th minute, the Thai women's futsal team equalized when Saengravee Meekham scored with a left-footed shot through the goalkeeper, leveling the score at 1-1.
After equalizing, Thailand intensified their attack. At the 9th minute, from a kick-in, Natthamon Ajkla passed to Darika Pienphayalun, who shot left-footed, deflecting off an Indonesian defender into the top corner, putting Thailand ahead 2-1.
At the 14th minute, from a kick-in, Dinar Kartika's shot deflected off Sasiprapa Suksan and went in, tying the score again at 2-2.
At the 18th minute, Jenjira Bubpha took a long shot that hit the post, rebounded to Darika Pienphayalun, who volleyed it in, putting Thailand ahead 3-2.
At the 19th minute, Indonesia equalized 3-3 when Rosita Igeu dribbled past Praeploy Huajaipet and Nuengrutai Sornhong before scoring. The first half ended with this score.
In the second half, both teams exchanged attacks. At the 30th minute, Thailand took the lead again from a kick-in: Jenjira Bubpha shot, and Darika Pienphayalun deflected the ball with her foot into the net, making it 4-3.
At the 35th minute, Indonesia equalized to 4-4 from a kick-in, when Novita Muarni passed to Rosdiana Fitri, who deflected the ball in with her foot.
Both teams had chances but couldn't score, ending the 40 minutes tied 4-4, leading to extra time.
In extra time, at the 42nd minute, Thailand had a chance when Nuengrutai Sornhong sent a long ball to Praeploy Huajaipet, who shot just wide with her left foot. The half ended tied 4-4.
At the 49th minute, Thailand had another chance when Saengravee Meekham shot left-footed on target but the Indonesian goalkeeper saved it.
No goals were scored afterward, so the game remained tied 4-4 after extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Indonesia won with a 11-10 score in the shootout, advancing to the final against Vietnam, while Thailand will compete for the bronze medal against the Philippines.
This marked the first time in history that the Thai women's futsal team missed out on the SEA Games gold medal after winning five consecutive titles since the competition began in 2007 in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Thailand's next match in women's futsal at the 33rd SEA Games will be the bronze medal match against the Philippines at BTU HALL, Bangkokthonburi University, on 18 Dec 2025 GMT+7 at 13:30, broadcast live on the TrueVisions NOW application.
