Queen Leads Thai National Sailing Team to Receive SEA Games 2025 Gold Medal from King Rama X

The Queen led the Thai national sailing team to receive the 2025 SEA Games gold medal from His Majesty King Rama X.

On 18 December 2025 at 12:45 PM, Her Majesty the Queen and the Thai national sailing team (SSL 47) began competing in the 33rd SEA Games sailing event final alongside athletes from four participating nations: Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

Today, besides Her Majesty the Queen serving a vital role on the boat as strategist and navigator—key positions—she also helped steer the rudder, enabling the boat to swiftly sail in the designated direction.

Although the Thai national sailing team secured the SEA Games gold medal, marking the first gold in the newly added keelboat SSL 47 category among 50 sports this year, Her Majesty the Queen worked closely with the team, fully committed to the competition. She used a compass to observe and analyze advantages and disadvantages, planned wind directions to decide the best course, and alternated roles with team members as needed, effectively supporting everyone until the end of race 8, the deciding round.

Today, the Thai team also demonstrated strong unity, finishing first in race 8 with a time of 41 minutes and 31 seconds. Malaysia took second place, and Myanmar came third. Combining results from all eight races, the Thai sailing team captured a historic gold medal.

Her Majesty the Queen participated in the keelboat sailing event (SSL 47) at the 33rd SEA Games 2025, a great honor reflecting her dedication to promoting Thai sailing at national and international levels. Sailing is a global sport she supports to inspire young sailors, especially youth, to develop skills and advance to international competition, fostering the sport's growth.

The keelboat SSL 47 is a newly added sport at this year's SEA Games among 50 sports. It is a large sailboat, 47 feet long, with three sails: mainsail (large sail), jib sail (front sail), and spinnaker (balloon sail). The boat weighs 3,300 kilograms and carries 8 to 10 athletes whose combined weight must not exceed 730 kilograms, with at least two athletes of different genders onboard. The 33rd SEA Games held eight races, with the team having the lowest penalty points winning the SSL Mixed gold medal.

Thailand was honored by the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) to host the 33rd SEA Games in 2025. The event emphasized unity among Southeast Asian nations, with athletes from 10 countries participating: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, and Thailand. A total of 8,266 athletes competed across 50 sports. The Games took place from 9 to 20 December 2025 in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces, both well-equipped to serve as international hubs for sports, tourism, education, innovation, and services.

At 5:58 PM, His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen proceeded to the award ceremony site for the sailing competition at the 33rd SEA Games 2025. Present to pay respects were Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Sports Authority of Thailand Major General Thammanat Prompao, Assistant Professor Pimon Sriwikrom, President of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand under Royal Patronage, Minister of Tourism and Sports Atthakorn Sirilak, and the organizing committee.

Then, at the ceremony pavilion, Her Majesty the Queen proceeded to the line of Thai national athletes. The Minister of Tourism and Sports reported the results of the SSL 47 sailing competition at the 33rd SEA Games 2025. The master of ceremonies announced the bronze medalists, Myanmar; the silver medalists, Malaysia; and Her Majesty the Queen, representing the Thai sailing team, received the gold medal and the event mascot from His Majesty the King.

Subsequently, she participated in the flag-raising ceremony for the gold, silver, and bronze medalist teams. Afterward, they proceeded to the athletes’ award stand to have a royal photo taken with Her Majesty the Queen and the medal-winning athletes from the three nations.
